Chile and Argentina

These pictures were taken in December & January 2006 during a trip to Chile and Argentina. I visited Santiago, Pucon, Torres Del Paine National Park, Punta Arenas, Puerto Natales and Puerto Montt in Chile and Bariloche, Esquel, Puerto Madryn, Ushuaia, El Calafate, El Chalten and Buenos Aires in Argentina. I celebrated some of the special occasions on the trip by spending Christmas in the Torres del Paine National Park, New Years Eve in Buenos Aires and my second longest day of the year in Ushuaia - the most southerly town in the world. I also had the unique experience of being in Santiagio on the day Augustus Pinochet died - seeing thousands of Chileans take to the streets to celebrate or in some cases express their sorrow or anger was a sight to behold - as I had only arrived that day we at first thought it was perhaps celebrations after a football game until I asked some locals what was happening.

Other highlights of the trip were watching Orcas and Southern Right Whales and visiting the Magellanic Penguin Colony around Puerto Madryn, cruising the Beagle Channel and visiting the Los Glaciares National Park and Glaciar Gray at Torres Del Paine. Chile and Argentina stunningly beautiful, with friendly people and a relaxed atmosphere - I made sure I tried the Calafate berries in El Calafate and visited the Magellan statue in Punta Arenas to rub the toe of the Fuegian Indian - so hopefully I will get to go back one day!
